Special Waste Collection

There are many items that consumers have doubt about when it comes to proper disposal. Some may be discarded as regular garbage and others require special treatment. Below is a list of some of the most common items that require special treatment. If you have additional questions on disposal procedures, please check out Colorado's Department of Public Health and Environment website for specific instructions. click here.

Appliances
All except those containing refrigerants may be accepted at landfills

Batteries
Batteries such as D, C, AA, AAA, and 9-volt household are not considered hazardous while rechargeable computer and cell-phone batteries and button-cell batteries used for hearing aids, watches, and calculators are.

Cleaning Solvents
Considered hazardous wastes are: fire extinguishers, aerosol cans, bathroom and tile cleaners, toilet-bowl cleaners, oven cleaners, and drain cleaners.

Computers and Electronics
Almost all computers and televisions contain hazardous materials that, if disposed of improperly, may pose a risk to public health and the environment.

Construction Debris
Although most construction debris is not considered hazardous, it is generally too bulky and heavy for a normal trash truck and should be considered for special handling. Any treated lumber used in deck, fences, picnic tables, playground equipment and landscaping is hazardous and is restricted from normal landfill disposal.

Fluorescent Lamps
These are the units to which the bulbs are attached – not the bulbs themselves. The actual bulbs should be placed in cardboard or taped together to help keep from shattering when thrown in the truck.

Paint
Solvent based paints and stains, oil or alcohol-based; paint thinner; varnish; paint stripper; and paintbrush cleaners are hazardous waste. Latex paint is water-based and not considered hazardous. The paint needs to be dried for trash hauler to pick up curbside.  Cat Litter and/or Floor Dry will dry out latex paints.

Motor Oil, Kerosene and Gasoline
These are most certainly hazardous. Less obvious are moth balls and stain and spot removers. Also on the list are antifreeze, lead-acid batteries, auto-body repair products such as Bondo, brake fluid, and degreasers.

Propane Gas Cylinders
These are hazardous, along with Chemical Fertilizers and Swimming-pool chemicals.

Used Tires
Tires should not be disposed of in a regular landfill.

Annual Collections

Some counties and municipalities conduct annual collections of household hazardous wastes, while others have permanent collection facilities or sponsor curbside pickup programs.

Household chemical waste collections are limited to residents of the county or municipality that sponsors the event or facility. Proof of residency is usually required before wastes will be accepted.
There may also be a fee associated with collections to help defray the costs of the collection activities.
